It’s that time of year. The kids are going back to school, the leaves are just beginning to show the first signs of autumn, and MLS teams are clinching playoff spots. Pumpkin spice-flavored everything is here.

We knew LAFC was in, but Week 26 added two more teams to the list and the first to lock up berths in the Eastern Conference. NYCFC and Philadelphia still have work to do in terms of seeding (not so much of LAFC), but at least they know they’ll get a chance to play for the Cup.

Rivalry Week has come and gone and here we are to pick up the pieces.

We don’t know about you, but we’re gassed. Spent. Wasted. Ready for a week of recuperation. It turns out mutual enmity makes for some pretty intense soccer matches.

From Friday night’s Cascadia Cup madness through to a wild El Trafico, Rivalry Week delivered.

A backheel winner. A four-goal blowout. Rivalry trophies lifted Portland by the visitors and Utah by the home team. Zlatan… Zlataning, then LAFC showing their quality…

There are many candidates for when the stretch run of the season begins in Major League Soccer.

Maybe it’s when the final full month of the regular season begins. (This year, that’s September.) Maybe it’s when rosters freeze and teams can’t make any more additions to their squads (coming Aug. 30). Maybe it’s when the schedules finally sync up and everyone is on the same number of games played (no idea).

Or, maybe it’s when the first team officially qualifies for the postseason. If that’s the…

The MLS secondary transfer window slammed shut last Wednesday, ending a brief and intense barrage of moves as clubs worked to solidify their rosters for the stretch run of the season. The Galaxy finally got their man, Cristian Pavon, LAFC added a young star in Brian Fernandez, and a handful of teams feverishly worked the trade market in a bid to get better.

What does it all mean? It’s too early to tell. The impact the new players will have is yet to be seen, though there are several clubs expected…

It was a weekend of statements made across Major League Soccer, and the Power Rankings are taking note.
We see you, Alejandro Bedoya and the Philadelphia Union, stomping DC United and digging in at the top of the East. We see you, LAFC, reminding everyone that “hottest” doesn’t mean “best” and that you can get it done without Carlos Vela. We see you, Minnesota United, winning ugly and claiming second place. We see you…Colorado maybe? Six goals is a lot.

What about RSL? That win means something,…

Welcome to the All-Star edition of ESPN’s Major League Soccer Power Rankings.

This week, we all take a collective breath and pause for the midseason clasico pitting the best performers of the first half of the season against a barnstorming European powerhouse led by a man who is either color blind or REALLY committed to his style choices.

Does Diego Simeone know about summer in Central Florida?

Anyway, before we go, let’s celebrate with a one good ranking. See you soon, Orlando!

ESPN’s Jon Champion and Taylor Twellman discuss Seattle’s quality and Atlanta’s continued struggles to find consistency under Frank de Boer.

It’s the most complicated time of the year for MLS teams, with the weather steamy, the transfer window open and nothing yet secure when it comes to playoff places. This week the intrigue kicks up just a small notch more with a United vs. United showdown in Atlanta, a chance for another United to prove their postseason bona-fides versus Real Salt Lake and the latest installment in Matias Almeyda’s man-marking revolution in San Jose.

United vs. United

There’s drama in Atlanta following Gonzalo…

The first El Trafico of 2019 is set for Friday night at Dignity Health Sports Park, reigniting Major League Soccer’s newest, but perhaps most fascinating rivalry.
The game has everything you’d want out of a Tinseltown showdown: Plenty of star power, some big story lines, and a host of intriguing subplots. One team is trying to stake its claim to soccer supremacy in Los Angeles, while the other is trying to claw back a bit of respect from the upstart neighbor.
Here’s everything you need to know for…

The theme of the rankings this week is communication. It’s important to be clear with your message when conducting the very important business of soccer: Miscommunication can lead to a host of problems and result in numerous aggrieved parties. No one wants angry middle-aged men stalking referees and screaming obscenities. Think of the children.
Here at the rankings, we always aim to be understood. We say what we mean, no messing around. Our hand signals are vigorous; our voices are resonant. So…

A schedule filled with midweek games stretched the resources of teams across Major League Soccer this round, leading to silly mistakes that really shouldn’t happen.
We here at MLS Power Rankings wouldn’t know anything about that. Thanks to a very nap-heavy daily calendar, we’re always in tip-top shape. The Power Rankings don’t make mistakes. The Power Rankings are prefect.
With all the majesty of a Zlatan IRBahimovic wonder-strike from midfield, let’s get ranking.
Previous rankings: Week 17 |
