This was about cutting losses. This was about moving on. This was about accepting the fact that when you make tons of decisions you will inevitably make some bad ones. And how you react to bad decisions is often as important as the good decision that you do make.

What it was not about is emotion. The folks who run Elliott Management, owners of Milan, aren’t in the business of emotion. If they were, they wouldn’t have stuck around this long managing close to $10 billion in (mostly) other people’s…

Italy look rested and rather comfortable in Euro 2020 qualifying right now. It’s a refreshing change after failing to reach the 2018 World Cup.

Perhaps it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to hear Roberto Mancini say “I prefer the blue.”

His opinion on Italy’s new green shirt, which the team will wear for Saturday’s qualifier with Greece — stream live: 2.45 p.m. ET, ESPN+ (U.S. only) — isn’t necessarily that of a traditionalist. Mancio won league titles as a player in the blue of Sampdoria and Lazio and his greatest successes as a coach came in the same hue at Inter and Man City. Superstition is the way.

“We’ll see what it looks…

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Friday night, the United States men’s national team opens their CONCACAF Nations League campaign at Audi Field. The opponent? Cuba, the 178th best team in the world and 25th best team in CONCACAF, according to the most recent FIFA rankings.

It’s a game the Americans should not just win, but dominate. They’ve done so in the past, posting a 3-0 record and a +14 goal differential over the last three home matches against the island nation.

LAS ROZAS DE MADRID, Spain — The handle turns, the door opens and Saul Niguez bursts into the room. There’s just enough space to slip quietly past, out towards the training pitch and up to the players’ residence for lunch, but he’s not about to do that. He’s been listening in from a small office covered with hundreds of old portraits of footballers at the Spanish national team’s Las Rozas HQ, 25km northwest of Madrid, and he’s grinning.

“¡Joder, que ingles, loco!” he shouts as he bounds through,…

Prague is one of the most picturesque cities in Europe, a great place to enjoy a weekend away, but from the perspective of the man charged with policing English football supporters, this Friday is most certainly not the time nor the place to stage an England Euro 2020 qualifier against the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic capital is the latest city having to brace itself for a visit from England’s sizeable travelling contingent for the next round of Euro 2020 qualifying (Stream live in U.S.:…

Even before a ball was kicked, Manchester United bosses expected a hard season in 2019-20.

Everton more than matched the asking price to loan defender Marcos Rojo on deadline day but the deal was canned at the last minute over fears that Marco Silva already had a stronger squad. Chris Smalling was told he could not move to Goodison Park but was allowed to join Roma.

Privately, Silva accused United of sabotaging Everton’s season before it had started by leaving him with just two senior centre-backs,…

Craig Burley says Frank Lampard has rejuvenated Chelsea with youth after the Blues’ 4-1 win over Southampton.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool are setting a relentless early pace in the Premier League.

Eight games into the 2019-20 Premier League season, Liverpool have made a record start by winning all eight fixtures so far to sit eight points clear of the chasing pack heading into the international break. For Jurgen Klopp’s team, the season could not have gone any better and Liverpool are now overwhelming favourites to win the English title for the first time since 1990.

But what about the rest of the so-called “Big Six?” Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United have…
