Tigres’ Andre-Pierre Gignac led the celebrations as the club won its seventh Liga MX trophy..

LEON, Mexico — The highlight of Sunday’s Liga MX 2019 Clausura final second leg wasn’t Tigres lifting the trophy in Estadio Leon. It wasn’t even the guy dressed as a lion — Leon is “lion” in Spanish — who whisked off his huge head and proposed to his girlfriend ahead of kickoff outside the stadium, or the ice-lolly seller that discussed flavors with French striker Andre-Pierre Gignac. And don’t mention the 0-0 draw itself, which wasn’t anywhere near as entertaining as was expected.

Tigres have a 1-0 first-leg lead, but it is far too close to call entering the second leg at Leon’s Nou Camp.
LEON, Mexico — Ten years ago this month, Tigres stared relegation in the face.
Approaching the last round of matches of the 2009 Clausura, the Monterrey-based club had to rely on Club America not being defeated by Necaxa to remain in Mexico’s first division. Las Aguilas did them the favor and got the victory.

Perhaps nothing highlights the meteoric rise of the northern club more than how close it came to relegation only a decade ago. If that Necaxa result had gone the other way, Ricardo ”Tuca”…

As MLS and Liga MX mull a new tournament like the SuperLiga of the mid-2000s, Taylor Twellman says the time is right for a new competition.
Club Leon (1) vs. Tigres (2)
First leg: Thursday, 9:45 p.m. ET, Estadio Universitario
Second leg: Sunday, 9:06 p.m. ET, Estadio Leon
The 2019 Clausura final pits the undisputed team of the season, Leon, against the team of the decade, Tigres, in a battle between the two highest finishers in the regular season. If you go on form, Leon just about has the edge, but if the criteria is pedigree, then there is no doubt that Tigres have the advantage.
Here’s how the two teams shape up ahead of the 2019…

Cruz Azul are staggering in 2019 and have declined since they reached the Apertura final. A game vs. Veracruz should be a great tonic for what ails them.

Round eight of the 2019 Clausura is almost upon us with one new face on the manager’s bench and other head coaches under fire. Here are three things to watch out for this weekend:

Can Veracruz provide a reprieve for struggling Cruz Azul?

When things are looking bad, a game against Veracruz is about as good as it gets for a Liga MX side. And for Cruz Azul, things have gradually declined since that final Apertura loss in December to Mexico City rival Club America.

There are different ways to measure…

True to their name, Mexican side Club Leon have appointed a fearsome new mascot: an actual, real-life lion.
Three cubs were recently born at Leon Zoo, one of which — Sambu — was named after Leon’s new signing, midfielder Rubens Sambueza.
As well as his 34-year-old namesake, Sambu has also joined the club as their new official mascot.
Sambu was sworn in at an unveiling ceremony that saw the youngster sign up as a club member — using a paw print, naturally.
While critics maintain that he’s still…

ESPN’s Sam Borden joins Bob Ley to discuss what the 2026 tournament will look like and what kind of an impact it will have on the host nations.
Landon Donovan and Club Leon are parting ways before the end of his contract, the club announced in a statement on Sunday.
Donovan came out of retirement for a second time in January to join the Liga MX club, but he didn’t feature regularly for the club as Leon finished 13th in the 2018 Clausura standings.
The 36-year-old’s contract ran through the end of 2018, but the announcement confirmed that he won’t compete with the club in the upcoming Apertura this fall.
The Leon statement read in part:…

ESPN FC’s Shaka Hislop addresses the many layers of Landon Donovan’s recent comments expressing a desire for an American to be the next USMNT head coach.
Landon Donovan has told ESPN FC that changing the incentive in the U.S. youth soccer landscape from winning to developing players would result in better players being produced.
Speaking prior to Leon’s 1-0 friendly win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday — a match in which Donovan scored — the all-time MLS leading scorer spoke on a number of topics, but returned often to the state of youth development in the U.S.
For Donovan, the aforementioned change in emphasis starts with coaching.

The FC crew discuss Carlos Vela’s performances early on at LAFC and whether he can make the case for a spot on Mexico’s World Cup squad.

The guys examine the first weekend of the MLS season, preview the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals and discuss Mexico’s plan to freeze promotion/relegation. Five talking points from Round 11 of games in the Liga MX 2018 Clausura:
1. Donovan struggling for meaningful minutes at Leon
Ahead of Club Leon’s 2-0 loss to Club America on Saturday, Landon Donovan said that the match inside Estadio Azteca was one that grabbed his attention before he signed on to play in Liga MX. Given the 36-year-old’s history with the U.S. national team and the stadium’s significance for El Tri, that was natural.
Going into the game, it looked as those Donovan would be in line…

Landon Donovan looking forward to his return to Estadio Azteca with Leon.
Former U.S. international Landon Donovan will return to Estadio Azteca Saturday when Leon takes on Club America in a clash the 36-year-old marked down as one of the standouts when he signed for La Fiera.
“It’s a historic stadium all over the whole world,” Donovan told reporters on his arrival in Mexico City on Friday. “That’s why whenever I played [with the national team] it was joyful and then usually sad, but I’m happy for the opportunity to play here again.
“When I signed here I looked at the…
