Newcastle signed Japan forward Yoshinori Muto from Mainz on a four-year contract on Thursday, hours after manager Rafa Benitez hinted at concerns over a lack of transfer spending following a 4-0 friendly defeat.
Newcastle said last week that they had reached an agreement with the Bundesliga club for the transfer. Muto’s move was completed on Thursday after he was granted a work permit.

Mainz have rejected a big-money bid for Ivory Coast international Jean-Philippe Gbamin from an unnamed Premier League suitor, according to the club’s sporting director.

A bizarre VAR decision caused mayhem in a Bundesliga game on Monday night when teams were ordered back on to the pitch at half time when the referee decided to award a penalty after watching a replay.

It was a miserable night for Mainz in Frankfurt with three calamitous errors and a red card seeing them lose 3-0 in the quarter-finals of the German Cup.

The referee helps himself to some sweets following a stoppage in play during the German Cup clash between Frankfurt and Mainz.
Freiburg will not protest about the VAR decision to award a penalty to Mainz during half-time of the Bundesliga match between the two on Monday, but said they remain unhappy about the incident.
