Rather than the crowning achievement of her career, winning a second consecutive World Cup title marked the end of three years that Carli Lloyd hopes never to repeat.
In an interview this week on ESPN’s “Laughter Permitted with Julie Foudy” podcast, the 37-year-old Lloyd spoke at length about her frustrations with a diminished role on the U.S. women’s national team after the 2016 Olympics and the toll the past three years took on her professionally and personally.
“I’m not going to lie and sugarcoat…

A new filing from the plaintiffs in a pay discrimination lawsuit against U.S. Soccer alleges that if members of the women’s national team were paid under the same terms as the men’s national team, they would have earned roughly three times as much as their actual compensation.
The information comes in a new brief filed Monday by the plaintiffs in response to a U.S. Soccer filing last week opposing certification of the players’ class action status.
Twenty eight members of the women’s national team…

Past, present and future come together when the United States plays Ireland on Saturday (ESPN2, 10 p.m. ET), the first game for the Americans since they won the Women’s World Cup not quite four weeks ago in France.

The past is inescapable in the Rose Bowl, where 90,000 fans witnessed the 1999 World Cup final that provided — with Brandi Chastain’s help — an unforgettable scene. But that isn’t the only history in the grand old stadium, where three years later the U.S. women played in obscurity…

LYON, France — Among the waves Megan Rapinoe’s words generated during this World Cup, one of her first answers created barely a ripple at the time.
As the U.S. team held its training camp in the days before its opener against Thailand, Rapinoe — before she became the lead character in the entire tournament — listened to an English reporter ask her if this World Cup had special meaning because, he noted, it would surely be her last.
She started to answer, spooling out some boilerplate about taking…
