When Christian Pulisic’s $73 million move to Chelsea was announced in January, there were equal parts excitement and trepidation.
The anticipation came from the American heading to one of the world’s biggest clubs for a fee more than three times the previous record for a U.S. international. If Pulisic could break through with the Blues, there was a chance that he could live up to the predictions — or hopes — that he would become the first transcendent American star.
But the enthusiasm was tempered…

The Timbers Army went silent for the first 33 minutes of Friday’s match against the archrival Seattle Sounders.
Major League Soccer announced on Tuesday that it has suspended its ban on fans waving the Iron Front flag for the rest of the 2019 season, including the playoffs.
MLS had previously banned displays of the flag, saying that it violated a provision in its Fan Code of Conduct that prohibited political signage. MLS stated that since the Iron Front symbol is linked with antifa, which it views as a political organization, that the flag couldn’t be displayed.

A penalty from Yoshimar Yotun and another goal from Jonathan Rodriguez two minutes later helped Cruz Azul to a 2-1 victory over Tigres in the Leagues Cup final.

ESPN FC’s Alejandro Moreno says a merger between MLS and Liga MX will not work because of the huge structural differences of the sport in the United States.
LAS VEGAS — The announced attendance at the inaugural Leagues Cup final between Cruz Azul and Tigres UANL was 20,132, or just over half of Sam Boyd Stadium’s 40,000 capacity. The tally was fitting given that half-measures defined the first edition of the tournament.
While word of the creation of the Leagues Cup first leaked out in February, it wasn’t until late May that the teams were finalized. The venue for Wednesday’s final, which mostly serves as the home for UNLV’s college football team, wasn’t…
