Major League Soccer: Aaron Long (36′) New York Red Bulls 1-0 Montreal Impact
The New York Red Bulls are determined to hang on to U.S. international defender Aaron Long, despite an improved offer from an unspecified French club.
The latest offer of $4 million — confirmed by multiple sources — was made earlier this week, and would match Giancarlo Gonzalez’s move from the Columbus Crew to Palermo in 2014 as the highest transfer for an MLS defender. But according to Long’s agent, Shaun Higgins, the Red Bulls have placed a valuation on the defender that is inconsistent with…

Sebastian Salazar and Steve Nicol dissect the controversial goal that condemned NYCFC to defeat at rivals NY Red Bulls in the Hudson River derby.

The United States’ final game before the Gold Cup was a disaster for Gregg Berhalter’s side, which got crushed by Venezuela in Cincinnati.
Coming off a depressing loss to Jamaica on Wednesday night in Washington D.C., Gregg Berhalter and the United States men’s national team needed a strong performance against Venezuela in Cincinnati to reclaim some confidence ahead of the Gold Cup.
They did not get it.
Thanks to a series of defensive errors in the first half and an attack that failed to break through Venezuela’s deep-lying defense, the Americans fell 3-0 in front of 23,955 fans at Nippert Stadium.

For Aaron Long, the low point of his career came a couple months into the 2014 season. He was 21, a year removed from an All-Big West First-Team career as a central midfielder at the University of California Riverside and recently drafted in the second round by the Portland Timbers. The MLS club sent him down the coast on loan to Sacramento Republic. Preki, the USL side’s coach, saw talent but not a place for Long on his team and wanted the Timbers to find another spot for the young player.

Josh Sargent got the U.S. off and running with his second international goal, but a second-half surge from Peru saw them snatch a late draw.
A young U.S. men’s national team nearly managed a victory against a talented Peru team in East Hartford, Connecticut, only to see a late goal from the South Americans ruin the party and push the game to a 1-1 draw.
Positives
Despite their youth, the Americans seemed intent on engaging the Peruvians whenever possible. The defending from the backline was solid, with good communication between goalkeeper Brad Guzan and center-backs Aaron Long and Cameron Carter-Vickers. The attacking duo of Josh Sargent…
