Roma’s search for their first trophy in nine years got a lot harder after being deservedly beaten by crosstown rivals Lazio in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semifinal. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ciro Immobile did the goalscoring damage, as Simone Inzaghi set up his side brilliantly to swarm one of Europe’s in-form teams, easily soaking up Roma’s tame attacks and tearing gaping holes in their backline on the break.

Normally reliable and solid in the middle, Daniele De Rossi had one of his worst performances in a while vs. Sampdoria.

Roma consigned their feint Serie A title hopes to the dustbin by conceding two daft goals within seven minutes of taking a 2-1 lead at Sampdoria. The loss was Roma’s first defeat of 2017, and allowed Juventus to go four points clear with a game in hand and also gave Napoli the chance to pile the pressure on for second spot.

Radja Nainggolan’s first-half goal was all Roma needed to beat Udinese and pull closer to Juventus at the top of table.

Roma closed the gap between them and Serie A leaders Juventus to just one point after their gritty 1-0 win at Udinese was followed up by a dramatic 2-1 win for Fiorentina over the Old Lady, but regardless of the result of that intense encounter the Giallorossi can be happy with their side’s new-found ability to grind out results when not at their best.
