Former player Kate Markgraf will be the first general manager of the U.S. women’s national soccer team, a source with knowledge of the process confirmed to ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle.
Yahoo earlier reported Markgraf’s hiring. The move is expected to be announced Monday.
Markgraf won a World Cup as a member of the USWNT in 1999 as well as two Olympic gold medals and has 201 caps with the program.
As the first GM, she will have to find a replacement for coach Jill Ellis, who has stepped down after leading…

Former USWNT defender Kate Markgraf joins ESPN FC to react to Jill Ellis’ decision to step down as U.S. coach after winning her second World Cup. The United States is making plans to bid for the hosting rights to the 2027 Women’s World Cup, U.S. Soccer Federation president Carlos Cordeiro indicated on Monday.
Cordeiro was speaking on a conference call with reporters in which he announced that Kate Markgraf has been named GM of the U.S. women’s national team while Earnie Stewart had been promoted from his GM position with the U.S. men to be the USSF sporting director, overseeing all of the technical aspects of the federation.

PASADENA, Calif. — A month after pledging to double the prize money for the 2023 Women’s World Cup to $60 million, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said Saturday that he believes the organization will exceed that goal.
“We have until 2023 to discuss about the prize money,” Infantino said. “I think we need to market it as well in a certain way. I’m very confident, I’m sure we can go higher than doubling.”
On vacation in California, Infantino spent Saturday as part of the largest domestic crowd to…

Past, present and future come together when the United States plays Ireland on Saturday (ESPN2, 10 p.m. ET), the first game for the Americans since they won the Women’s World Cup not quite four weeks ago in France.

The past is inescapable in the Rose Bowl, where 90,000 fans witnessed the 1999 World Cup final that provided — with Brandi Chastain’s help — an unforgettable scene. But that isn’t the only history in the grand old stadium, where three years later the U.S. women played in obscurity…

The women’s soccer classifieds just got interesting. The pressure is intense, the honeymoon period will be brief with the Olympics around the corner and your players are currently suing your bosses. But head coach of the United States women’s national team is still a dream job.
And with Jill Ellis’ decision to step down after the team’s World Cup victory tour, the position is also open.
Even with Olympic qualifying around the corner, naming a new coach may take some time. First off, U.S. Soccer…

Jill Ellis, the only coach to win two Women’s World Cups, is stepping down as head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team.
U.S. Soccer announced Tuesday that Ellis will step down after the USWNT completes its victory tour in October.
Ellis, 52, will remain with U.S. Soccer as an ambassador.
“When I accepted the head coaching position this was the timeframe I envisioned,” Ellis said in a statement. “The timing is right to move on and the program is positioned to remain at the pinnacle of women’s…

The hotel restaurant is otherwise deserted on a winter afternoon. A long training camp for the U.S. women’s national team is coming to a close. The start of the World Cup in France is still more than a year away. And Jill Ellis is downright giddy. It often happens when she talks soccer.
She moves packets of sugar around the table in front of her like a street hustler working a game of three-card monte. But she isn’t trying to deceive. She wants you to understand. She wants you to see what she sees,…
