Napoli missed chance after chance against Fiorentina, but a late goal from Lorenzo Insigne secured three points for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Mexico international Guillermo Ochoa insists his botched move to Napoli fell through over problems elsewhere, rather than his own qualities.
Standard Liege goalkeeper Ochoa, who impressed for Mexico at the World Cup, had been linked with a move to Napoli when their new signing Alex Meret broke an arm shortly after joining the club this summer. Ochoa, 33, had been one of the frontrunners for the role but David Ospina joined on loan from Arsenal instead.
“We only have one more obstacle…

Napoli is no longer interested in signing Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, club president Aurelio De Laurentiis said Wednesday.
De Laurentiis made public his interest in the current Standard Liege player after first-choice keeper Alex Meret fractured his finger in early July. But that has now ended. However, third-choice goalkeepers at Arsenal and Liverpool in David Ospina and Simon Mignolet are still on his radar.
“Maybe we’ll sign Ospina — we’re negotiating and there are differences over what…

FW Hirving Lozano, PSV Eindhoven (Eredivisie)
With each passing day, it appears more and more likely that Lozano’s move to a bigger European club will have to wait. That said, a second Eredivisie season with PSV wouldn’t hurt…

ESPN FC’s Sebastian Salazar and Herculez Gomez provide insight as to why the Mexican federation has yet to clarify Juan Carlos Osorio’s future.
Mexico international Guillermo Ochoa’s path to joining Napoli appears to be clearing, club president Aurelio de Laurentiis has said.
De Laurentiis admitted his club’s interest in Ochoa on Tuesday while discussing the dilemma of each Serie A club only being allowed three non-European Union players. The rule threatens to squash deals to bring Ochoa in from Standard Liege and full-back Santiago Arias from PSV Eindhoven.
But the Italian club appear to have set their sights on France-born Bordeaux…

Neymar scored the opener and added an assist on Roberto Firmino’s first ever World Cup goal as Brazil defeated Mexico 2-0 to advance to the quarterfinals.

ESPN’s Tom Marshall recaps the main talking points after Mexico crashed out of the round of 16 for the seventh straight World Cup.
Samara, Russia — Once more, Mexico fell short in their quest for that elusive fifth World Cup game (“quinto partido”) — that remains the object of their obsession. Brazil’s relentless style was enough to prevail over a side that played inspired football for only 30 minutes. El Tri leave Russia on a bittersweet note, as despite a brilliant start to the World Cup with wins over Germany and South Korea, they were unable to meet the pre-tournament goals put forth by manager Juan Carlos Osorio.

Ludwig Augustinsson scored the first of three second half goals to set Sweden on their way to the knockout stages of the World Cup.

ESPN FC’s Seb Salazar and Herc Gomez say Mexico beat themselves against Sweden as their transition game was far from successful.

ESPN’s Tom Marshall says while it was an unbelievable night for football, Mexico will rue their disastrous second half against Sweden.

El Tri fans vocalise their appreciation after South Korea helped Mexico to advance to the round of 16 by defeating Germany 2-0 in Kazan.

Mexico returned to a cold and sad reality in Wednesday’s 3-0 loss to Sweden in their Group F finale. The Swedes forced El Tri back into the average football that, incredibly, it had been able to sidestep through its first two World Cup matches.

Sweden’s ruthless efficiency exposed Mexico’s weaknesses and could have eliminated the CONCACAF giants, but Germany’s own missteps propelled El Tri into the knockout rounds. But questions and uncertainty abound. There is an aura of vulnerability as Mexico…

Mexico have the fifth-most World Cup appearances of all time. Will this be the year they finally get past the round of 16?

Guillermo Ochoa is intimately familiar with Mexico’s media machine, one that feeds a constant need for anything to do with soccer. The goalkeeper for Belgian club Standard Liege and El Tri grew up around it and has found himself under its high-powered microscope.

The sense he gets is that there is no lack of manufactured criticism in his home country.

“They very much like to use certain words over others. Lots of times, the Mexican press can’t live without using the word ‘failure,'” said Ochoa….

When Guillermo Ochoa takes the stage, he shows what he can do.
This is a profile of Guillermo Ochoa, who is part of ESPN’s World Fame 100.
One of Mexico’s storied goalkeepers, Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa has excelled under intense pressure on the World Cup stage with El Tri.
As the starting goalkeeper for Club America at 18, Ochoa showcased cat-like reflexes in stopping shots that seemed impossible. In time, a number of prominent goalies lost their starting position to Ochoa, like Adolfo Ríos and then Argentine goalie Sebastian Saja. The young man with the…

Mark Donaldson and Kasey Keller look ahead to the World Cup and assess how far Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama are capable of going.

DALLAS — Mexico goalkeeping legend Oswaldo Sanchez spent the 1998 and 2002 World Cups on El Tri’s bench before finally getting his opportunity to shine at Germany 2006. The Guadalajara native earned 100 caps for Mexico, was named best goalkeeper in the 2005 Confederations Cup and ranks as one of El Tri’s best ever stoppers.

Sanchez is also a figure with a unique perspective on the current Mexican goalkeeping situation, given that Guillermo Ochoa and Jesus Corona were under his wing at the 2006…

MEXICO CITY — Hirving “Chucky” Lozano is breaking records in the Netherlands, while Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez once again got his name on the scoresheet. Later this week, Juan Carlos Osorio will announce his roster for Mexico’s upcoming friendlies against Belgium and Poland, and fortunately many of the key players, who will be in the roster, are going through positive runs.
Here’s a look back at this week’s Heroes and Villains:
