After the international break, South African football returns to domestic matters this weekend with the start of the Telkom Knockout, the second of three cup competitions in the season.
Cape Town City lifted the first piece of silverware last month when they won the MTN8, with the failure of the so-called ‘Big Three’ to lift that trophy putting the Telkom Knockout into sharper focus.
Kaizer Chiefs’ are desperate to end their well-documented club record barren run that is stretching close to three-and-a-half…

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that playmaker Lebogang Manyama will miss the next six weeks with a fractured elbow, while there are also concerns over star forward Khama Billiat.
Manyama was involved in a car accident on Tuesday and although he has been discharged from hospital, scans have confirmed that he will only return towards the end of November, missing next week’s Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates.
“Manyama has been ruled out for up to six weeks with a fractured elbow,” Chiefs physiotherapist…

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande is confident teammate Teenage Hadebe will prove equal to the task of repelling the fearsome Democratic Republic of Congo forward line in Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier despite his apparent lack of match fitness.
Hadebe was in imperious form as Zimbabwe held Congo-Brazzaville to a 1-1 draw in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier early last month, but he has since struggled to reclaim his status as a regular in the Chiefs set up.
The 22-year-old…

The 2018-19 Absa Premiership season is shaping up to be an intriguing tussle for a trophy seemingly ‘no-one wants’ as none of the 16 teams in the elite league have managed to find any consistency to pull ahead in the title race.

The South African championship has almost exclusively been fought out between a handful of clubs in recent years, but this campaign any number could emerge from the pack with a good run of fixtures.
Just five points separate leaders Bidvest Wits in top spot and Free…

Kaizer Chiefs’ inconsistency this season continued after they were beaten 1-0 by Polokwane City in an Absa Premiership clash played behind closed doors at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
Chiefs were being punished for fan misbehaviour at the same venue in April, and there would have been little for any paying customers to enthuse over in a limp performance just days after their Italian tactician Giovanni Solinas was named Coach of the Month for September.
The only goal of the game came in…

A busy weekend of action in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League began in unconvincing fashion on Friday as Maritzburg United and MTN8 cup winners Cape Town City played out a goalless draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
The result means both clubs have won only once in the new league campaign – Maritzburg in seven games and City in eight.
Both sides now also have seven points, still stuck in the bottom five places on the league table.
For City, clad in an unfamiliar all yellow away strip, it was their…

Orlando Pirates moved to the top of the Absa Premiership table and Kaizer Chiefs kept up their recent run of wins as South Africa’s Soweto giants flexed their muscles in domestic action on Saturday.
Pirates defeated Baroka FC 2-1, while Chiefs claimed a more comfortable 2-0 success at home to AmaZulu as they made it three wins from three in matches over the past eight days.
Pirates raced into a two-goal lead in Polokwane, but just like in their midweek draw with Cape Town City, then took their foot…

Kaizer Chiefs bounced back to form in emphatic style with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Cape Town City in their Absa Premiership clash on Saturday.
It was a first league win of the season for Giovanni Solinas’ side as they weathered a City storm and then picked their opponents apart in the second period after the home side had been reduced to 10 men following a red card for defender Taariq Fielies.
It will be relief for Solinas, who had only won one of his eight games in charge…
