Joe Thompson, the Rochdale midfielder who has beaten cancer twice in the past six years, has been forced to retire at the age of 29 after admitting that he has pushed his body to the “absolute limit.”
The former Manchester United trainee has announced his decision after being unable to overcome a hamstring injury sustained on the opening day of the League One season against Burton Albion in August.

Anthony Gerrard was on hand to stop a fan from confronting the referee in Oldham’s League One game against Rochdale.
Oldham boss Richie Wellens has condemned a supporter who invaded the pitch in his team’s match at Rochdale and appeared to target the referee.
The supporter slipped over as match official Peter Bankes looked to get out of his way, and was grabbed by Oldham’s Anthony Gerrard.
Gerrard had just given away a penalty when he fouled the home side’s Joe Thompson.
