U.S. international Sacha Kljestan has completed a move to Orlando City SC from the New York Red Bulls. New York Red Bulls sporting director Denis Hamlett says “it was not an easy decision” to trade captain Sacha Kljestan this week.
The Red Bulls shipped Kljestan — the league’s assists leader the past two seasons — and $150,000 in allocation money to Orlando City in exchange for Carlos Rivas and Tommy Redding.
It marked the second straight January in which New York has dealt away its captain in the offseason, after Dax McCarty joined the Chicago Fire in a surprise move in 2017.

Kljestan was already set to serve a one-game ban but the league added another and an increased fine for an “interaction with stadium security personnel,” it was announced on Friday.
Jozy Altidore, who already served a one-game suspension for his part in the incident, was also handed an additional undisclosed fine for simulation after the slight…

The FC crew examine the clash between Jozy Altidore and Sacha Kljestan, and the reaction from the clubs after halftime.

Following their on and off the field clashes against New York, Ale Moreno believes Jozy Altidore and Toronto FC need a serious change in behavior.
TORONTO — Toronto forward Jozy Altidore says video backs his account of last weekend’s tunnel clash with New York Red Bulls captain Sacha Kljestan, which caused both players to be ejected from the second leg of Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference semifinal.
Toronto appealed Altidore’s red card and one-game suspension, discipline that would cause him to miss the first leg of the conference final at Columbus on Nov. 21.
“I think the club’s doing a great job handling it and I’m looking forward…

New York Red Bulls were winners in a cagey, ill-tempered second leg in Canada, but Toronto FC still advanced on aggregate.
Toronto FC coach Greg Vanney said Jozy Altidore was “ambushed” by Red Bulls players Sunday on his way back to the locker room at half-time of a 1-0 loss to New York at BMO Field.
Toronto won the home and away tie 2-2 on aggregate thanks to two away goals in the first leg in Harrison, New Jersey, but the team could play its next match without Altidore as both he and Sacha Kljestan were handed red cards at half-time for violent conduct.

Altidore was given a yellow card for a first-half scuffle with…

Taylor Twellman suggests Bruce Arena’s squad for the next World Cup qualifiers could be the strongest U.S. squad in years.

Former Chicago Fire forward Brian McBride assesses how Bastian Schweinsteiger has adapted to an attacking role in MLS.

The news that Dax McCarty has been called into the U.S. squad ahead of next month’s World Cup qualifiers, while Sacha Kljestan has not, is a reminder that the fortunes of the two — which once seemed to be inextricably linked — have now diverged for good. McCarty’s great start with Chicago and Kljestan’s struggles to deal with McCarty’s absence and the expectations of the captaincy have defined the opening third of the season for each player.

Time was, when international weeks were a moment…
