With the Liga MX playoffs only weeks away, here is what we are watching this weekend:

1. Morelia win could leave Tigres on brink of missing playoffs
For all the positives that should be associated with Morelia under Roberto Hernandez, it isn’t usual for a Monarcas game to be the main talking point of the weekend, as unfair as that may be. But Morelia’s home game against Tigres on Friday is the match of the weekend and one with huge repercussions for the playoff battle.
Monarcas have won their…

The players may change but there is never any love lost when Mexico City rivals Club America and Cruz Azul clash.
13 Liga MX matchdays down, four to go.
With the end of the regular season — and the playoffs — inching closer, let’s take a look at three things you should keep an eye on in the next round of matches of the 2018 Apertura.
Stakes are high in the Clasico Joven
Without a doubt, Saturday night’s Clasico Joven between Cruz Azul and Club America will be one of the biggest games of the season. This weekend’s matchup of the two Mexico City teams is not only a crosstown rivalry, but also a highly-anticipated…

Tigres midfielder Jesus Duenas reflects on what it took to overcome Toronto FC and the significance of winning the first Campeones Cup.

Taylor Twellman, Herculez Gomez and Alejandro Moreno share their varying opinions on Toronto FC’s approach to the Campeones Cup following their defeat to Tigres.
Tigres coach Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti is no longer in the running to become the Mexico national team head coach, the Mexican federation (FMF) announced on Tuesday.
“Unfortunately, we’ve been notified by Tigres of the impossibility of considering Ricardo Ferretti as a candidate to manage the Mexican national team on a permanent basis,” read a statement from the FMF.
Ferretti will still take charge of next month’s games against Costa Rica (Oct. 11) and Chile (Oct. 16) and would be available to step…

Taylor Twellman, Herculez Gomez and Alejandro Moreno share their varying opinions on Toronto FC’s approach to the Campeones Cup following their defeat to Tigres.
Tigres coach Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti will not be allowed to join the Mexican national team on a permanent basis, the coach said on Monday in an interview.
Ferretti is currently El Tri’s interim head coach and left the door open to leaving the Liga MX club to take over Mexico earlier this month, but the Tigres bosses won’t allow it.
“[Tigres president] Miguel Garza and Mr. Zambrano [owner of CEMEX] told me: ‘You’re not leaving, we want you to complete the three years we signed you for,'” said Ferretti…

Much debate will follow the tragic events of Sunday night after the Clasico Regio. How can fans and authorities ensure that doesn’t happen again?

“We all lost.”

The bright yellow letters on the front page of one Mexican sports daily aptly summed up the sentiments after Sunday’s Clasico Regio. It wasn’t aimed at the scrappy 0-0 tie between derby rivals Tigres and Monterrey, but instead, it referred to the chilling scene ahead of the game.

This piece should be about the game itself, but Sunday evening was the moment the Clasico Regio arguably lost its innocence. The most heralded, organic and high-quality rivalry in all of Mexican football…

Fans dressed in Monterrey gear were shown chasing Tigres supporters. A car with Monterrey fans running…

The first ever Campeones Cup is in the books, after Tigres’ 3-1 win over Toronto FC on Wednesday night. But after a week in which no one quite knew what to expect from this meeting of champions of Major League Soccer and Liga MX, or just how much the trophy meant to the teams and leagues participating, Jeff Carlisle and Tom Marshall spoke to those who participated about the Campeones Cup’s place in the North American game.

Toronto FC: right game, wrong time

There is plenty that is weighing heavy…

Tigres became the inaugural Campeones Cup champions, defeating Toronto FC thanks to a pair of goals from Jesus Duenas.

Three points on Tigres’ 3-1 Campeones Cup win over Toronto FC at BMO Field on Wednesday night.

1. Tigres’ quality rises to the surface

You could say that this was a classic Tigres performance. First there was a feeling out period, and then once the weaknesses were properly identified, Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti’s men went to work.

The lack of communication on a Toronto FC back line consisting of Nick Hagglund, Michael Bradley and Eriq Zavaleta played right into Tigres’ hands. The Mexican side used…
