Berhalter, right, is getting to grips with his first USMNT camp though Trapp, left, has asserted himself as the crossword king.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — For his first camp as manager of the U.S. men’s national team, Gregg Berhalter instituted a rule: no cell phones in the dining area. The idea was he wanted the 28 players in attendance to talk with one another and bond over meals rather than have their heads buried in their phones. By next week, training camp will have opened for every one of the 24 teams in MLS. A few have already opened but while players are preparing to begin the real grind of preseason, the process of assembling rosters continues.

But over the last three months, Trapp has won the trust of interim coach…

Columbus midfielder Wil Trapp chats with Julie Stewart-Binks about #SaveTheCrew and what Columbus will expect from Toronto.

OBETZ, Ohio — The limelight has an odd way of leaving Wil Trapp almost as soon as it finds him.

Part of that is down to the position the 24-year-old plays on the field, that of a deep-lying midfielder. It’s a spot where his killer ball leading up to a goal comes two passes before the decisive shot is taken. Even when a player of the stature of Thierry Henry lavishes praise on Trapp, as he did three years ago, it’s not so much forgotten as the focus soon shifts to someone else.
