A wasteful Sydney FC are out of the AFC Champions League after a fiery 0-0 stalemate with a second-string Shanghai Shenhua.
Sitting third in Group H, the Sky Blues needed to beat last-placed Shanghai on Tuesday night and hope second-placed Suwon Bluewings failed to beat leaders Kashima Antlers at the same time to make the round of 16.
But the concurrent match in Japan didn’t run to script as Suwon won 1-0 on matchday six.

For all the talk of Sydney FC being a shot at lifting the Asian Champions League trophy, they will have to do better than their 2-0 humbling by Suwon Bluewings.
In the Sky Blues’ first continental litmus test over their one-and-a-half seasons of A-League dominance, the reigning champions suffered a first home defeat in almost two years.
They were silenced by a South Korean team still in preseason, thanks to a wonder strike and penalty from former Montenegro international Dejan Damjanovic.
