The CAF Champions League’s new format opens up the tournament to more clubs from less traditional footballing powers.
Idrissa Traore is a name already largely forgotten but the Malian midfielder will always have a position of some infamy in the history of the African Champions League.
He will be remembered again in the coming months as holders Mamelodi Sundowns were paired on Wednesday with AS Vita Club of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the draw for this year’s new-look group phase.
Traore, nicknamed “Essien” in his native country, moved at the start of last year to Vita but both he and his new employers…

The African Champions League is much-changed this time around.
The underground auditorium at the Confederation of African Football’s headquarters in the desert north of Cairo will be a lot busier than usual on Wednesday.
It is there that representatives from 32 different clubs will gather for the draws for the group stages of both this year’s African Champions League and African Confederation Cup.
Football on the continent ventures into unchartered waters this year with the expansion of the group phase in both competitions from eight to 16 teams, in a move…

Congo have named Sebastien Migne as their new coach ahead of their 2019 African Nations Cup qualification campaign.
Migne served as assistant to Claude le Roy during his tenures with Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo and most recently Togo at the Nations Cup finals in Gabon.
The French coach replaces Pierre Lechantre, who left the Congo job after losing World Cup qualifiers in October and November to Egypt and Uganda.
The 44-year-old will be looking to follow in the footsteps of another of Le Roy’s…

TP Mazembe Englebert won the CAF Confederation Cup.
The annual Super Cup seems as pointless a game as ever there was. It engenders little enthusiasm from the fans, no passion from the players and runs contrary to the principles of good competition. A single match to determine a trophy makes a mockery of the commitment, effort and sacrifice needed to lift silverware.
Yet this Saturday marks the 25th time that Africa is hosting its annual meeting between the winner of the previous year’s Champions League and African Confederation Cup, the continent’s…

Essam El Hadary is still at the top at the age of 44.
GABON — A goalkeeper’s career often lasts longer than his teammates, but gunning for a major continental title at the age of 44 seems somewhat far-fetched.
Yet Essam El Hadary is not only setting new records for longevity but also looking to become the most successful footballer in African history. On Wednesday, he will earn his 150th cap for his country — having debuted in a friendly against South Korea in 1996 — when Egypt take on Burkina Faso in the first semifinal at the African Nations Cup…

Cameroon have reached the African Nations Cup semifinals after a dramatic shootout win over Senegal.
It might come as something of a surprise to the occasional followers of African football that Cameroon compete in the semifinal of the African Nations Cup this Thursday for the first time in nine years.
Their frequent World Cup trips might suggest they are a much more dominant force on the continent. Indeed, the Indomitable Lions are often held up as the pinup boys of the African game.
But despite qualifying for both South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014, the truth is the lion’s roar has not been much…

Bance might not be consistent for Burkina Faso but he showed on Saturday that he’s still vital.

At a glance, Aristide Bance might resemble a footballing version of Big Bird with his mop of peroxide blond hair and gangly legs. But it would be more accurate to call the 32-year-old a consummate journeyman after a career that has taken in 15 clubs in 11 different countries since he went to Lokeren in Belgium more than a decade ago. Two separate stints in the Bundesliga, with Mainz and Augsburg, were the highlights of a career that has since involved clubs in Iran, South Africa and Latvia.

For…
