It has been a cornucopia of women’s football for Ghanaians this month, and it has illustrated why there should be hope, but also caution, for the sport in the African country.
In Uruguay at the U-17 World Cup, the Ghana team did what a lot of the country’s youth teams do: Dazzle and win over fans early on, but ultimately come unstuck at the big hurdles. Against Mexico, they lost on penalties in the quarterfinals.
The Black Maidens were in great form, winning all three group matches, before Mexico…

Hosts Ghana will play no further part in the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations after being held 1-1 by Cameroon in their final Group A game at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Queens were pipped in the final standings by Mali, who twice came back from behind to beat Algeria 3-2 to progress.
Ghana needed to better Mali’s result to progress and keep their hopes of a first Africa Women Cup of Nations title alive.
They started like a side confident of their chances of progress.
Captain Elizabeth…

Ghana have been made to wait until their final group game to book their spot in the Africa Women Cup of Nations semi-final after being defeated 2-1 by Mali in Accra on Tuesday.
Bassira Toure scored both goals for Mali either side of a Ghana penalty by Elizabeth Addo. Defeat leaves Ghana third in Group A on three points after two matches, level with Mali.
Group-leaders Cameroon, also on three points, face Algeria at the Accra Sports Stadium later on Tuesday.
A win would have all but secured Ghana’s…

Ghana coach Bashir Hayford believes his side are ready to end Nigeria’s Africa Women Cup of Nations dominance when the Black Queens host the upcoming biennial showpiece.
The Super Falcons have won 10 of the previous 12 tournaments, with only Equatorial Guinea – two-time winners – able to wrest the title away from Nigeria.
However, Hayford believes that the hosts, who have been defeated by the Falcons in three finals (1998, 2002, 2006), can finally get one over on their rivals.
“In the past, Nigeria…

The build-up to Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia has been less than ideal for coach Kwesi Appiah.
Kwadwo Asamoah, one of the Black Stars’ most impressive players in Europe this season, has withdrawn following a knee injury.
However, the circumstances of his absence prompted assistant coach Maxwell Konadu to deny suggestions that the Internazionale man had pulled out due to a rift with the Ayew brothers, thereby giving oxygen to the rumours.
Appiah will be hoping the focus…

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has defended his decision to call up some of the nation’s biggest names for this weekend’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia.
Asamoah Gyan has retained his place in the squad despite being without a goal – or a start – for Kayserispor this season, while the Ayew brothers have also returned to the fold after a year out of the squad, despite their underwhelming league form.
Ghana have taken just three points from their opening two AFCON qualifiers, and find…

For a team preparing for a big continental football competition as hosts, the atmosphere at the Black Queens training grounds is unusually muted.
At the El-Wak Stadium at the heart of a military base in Accra, Ghana’s women’s team go through their paces under scorching temperatures.
The session is competitive, and coach Bashir Hayford is in top voice, encouraging the ladies, admonishing them when he has to.
Apart from bus branded with logos of the Africa Women’s Championship, which Ghana is hosting…

Former Ghana international Kim Grant is confident he can bring the good times back to Accra Hearts of Oak after penning a three-year deal as director of football and head coach.
Grant becomes the latest in a long line of coaches to try and replicate Hearts of Oak’s successes in the late 90s and early 2000s when they dominated the local scene and won the Caf Champions League.
The club has struggled since then, and are without a major domestic title since 2008, when they won the last of their 20 Ghana…

Kwesi Appiah’s latest Ghana squad has highlighted the severity of one of the Black Stars’ longest standing problems – the dearth of quality strikers coming through.
There are few major talking points from Appiah’s squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia on November 18, although a lack of in-form strikers is an exception.
Jordan Ayew is making a return to the international fold after a year in the cold on the back of arguably his trickiest season in English football.

Andre and Jordan Ayew are set to end their year-long absence from the Black Stars squad after Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah named the duo in the West Africans’ Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia.
The brothers are among 20 players called up for the game in Addis Ababa on November 18.
They’ve not played for the national side since the 1-1 draw against Congo-Brazzaville in a World Cup qualifier in September 2017, having opted out of the return match.
Captain Asamoah Gyan, who also hasn’t played…
