Alexis Vega’s goal and subsequent celebration in the Clasico Tapatio caused a stir on social media.
MEXICO CITY — Two of Liga MX’s biggest derbies took place on Saturday, with Chivas earning the bragging rights over Atlas thanks to a 1-0 victory in Guadalajara’s Clasico Tapatio and Pumas managing a 1-1 tie against 10-man Club America in Mexico City’s Clasico Capitalino.
Chivas’ victory was sealed when young Mexico international Alexis Vega cut inside from the left wing and launched a swerving, dipping shot from outside the penalty area that left Atlas goalkeeper Camilo Vargas with no chance.

Lionel Messi followed Atlas on Twitter on Thursday but don’t expect to see Messi in Liga MX anytime soon.
Long-suffering fans of Liga MX club Atlas have not seen their team win a first-division title since 1951, but the Guadalajara institution achieved something on Thursday that no other Mexican club can boast: Lionel Messi followed them on Instagram.
Big day for @atlasfc. The Mexican club officially welcomed Lionel Messi to the “red-and-black family.”(Messi followed the club on Instagram) #ligamxeng pic.twitter.com/7sULNbptYR— Tom Marshall (@mexicoworldcup) January 18, 2019

Tigres are currently ninth in the table but the expected goals model would have them first.

There are two outstanding statistics a neutral would immediately find when scouring the Liga MX 2018 Apertura table after seven rounds of matches of the season. And both involve the number zero.
The first is Cruz Azul’s undefeated start to the season; the other is Atlas’ inability to score even a single goal.

But, as a little bit of midseason entertainment, what if we used expected goals to work out the result of each of the 63 games so far in the Apertura? How would it change our outlook on…

GUADALALARA, Mexico — Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” rang out inside Estadio Jalisco less than 10 minutes after Chivas had defeated Atlas 1-0 in Friday’s Clasico Tapatio.

“Don’t worry about a thing, ’cause every little thing gonna be alright…”

It was a perplexing choice of song given that home side Atlas had just completed the first seven games of the Apertura without scoring a single goal and broken Queretaro’s modern-day record of going 548 consecutive minutes without netting in Liga…

Recently retired Mexico international Rafa Marquez will become a director at Liga MX club Atlas, club president Gustavo Guzman has confirmed.
