As focus turns to the conference finals, check out the best goals so far in the 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs.

Jozy Altidore has received his fair share of criticism over the years, and he may be the U.S.’s most polarizing player.
TUKWILA, Wash. — Seattle Sounders forward Clint Dempsey was named the MLS Comeback Player of the Year for 2017, acknowledging his play in a season where he again became the leading scorer for the Seattle Sounders and reclaimed a place on the U.S. national team.
Dempsey, who scored 12 league goals this year and two more in the playoffs, was sidelined last season by an irregular heartbeat. And he says a full season of playing back at an elite level has eased his concerns.
“I just think I got…

Brian Schmetzer lauds Clint Dempsey after his brace booked Seattle’s place in the Western Conference final. The Seattle Sounders are working on a new contract to bring Clint Dempsey back to the team next season, sources confirmed to ESPN FC.
As first reported by FourFourTwo on Monday, both parties are confident in a deal for the 2018 season, when Dempsey, 34, will be entering an option year on his current contract.
However, the Sounders are likely to seek a reduction of the $3.89 million he made this season, creating the need for a new contract.

Seattle and Vancouver will head to the second leg of their Western Conference semifinal deadlocked after a draw in Canada.

Brian Schmetzer is pleased with Seattle’s clean sheet in Vancouver but thinks his side should have created more chances.

Clint Dempsey has as glittering a resume as one can find for an American player. He remains tied with Landon Donovan for the most goals in United States men’s national team history, with 57. His exploits at club level, in particular the parts of seven seasons he spent with Premier League side Fulham, are impressive as well.

Yet there is one stage where Dempsey, 34, hasn’t had things go his way. That would be the MLS Cup playoffs, and time is running out to set that right.

In Dempsey’s seven previous…

Major League Soccer: Clint Dempsey (24′) Seattle 1-0 Colorado

Seattle finish 2nd in the Western Conference and will enjoy a first-round bye heading in to the playoffs. Clint Dempsey will miss the Seattle Sounders’ opening playoff game as the club has no plans to appeal the red card the forward earned on Sunday, a league source has told ESPN FC.
Dempsey was sent off midway through the first half of Sunday’s win over the Colorado Rapids after his elbow connected with the head of Mike da Fonte.
The red card was only shown after a video review, and after the decision, Dempsey sarcastically applauded Da Fonte and got in the defender’s face.
As a result of the dismissal,…

With the U.S. looking thin in central defense, the time’s right for Matt Miazga to step in.

Bruce Arena emphasises the importance of playing at home as the U.S. look to continue their WCQ resurgence vs. Costa Rica. Clint Dempsey is again on the bench for the U.S. in Friday night’s World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica.
Dempsey twice came off the bench in the Gold Cup knockout stage and provided the spark as the U.S. won the trophy earlier this summer.
And the Sounders man was back among the substitutes at Red Bull Arena, with coach Bruce Arena giving the starting nod up front to Bobby Wood and Jozy Altidore.

Clint Dempsey played hero for Seattle, with his headed goal the sole difference against Sporting Kansas City.

After a scoreless first-half, TFC exploded in the second-half against Portland, with Justin Morrow netting a brace.

Mark Donaldson and Herculez Gomez evaluate what to expect from three notable Americans as the Premier League season begins.
World Cup qualifying resumes in just over two weeks, so there are not many chances left to impress United States head coach Bruce Arena ahead of the critical clash against Costa Rica on Sept. 1.

After its Gold Cup final win over Jamaica, Bruce Arena understands his team is far from a finished product.

Wednesday’s victory in the Gold Cup final over Jamaica capped off a fruitful seven months for the U.S. men’s national team. Since taking over as manager, Bruce Arena has gone 14 games unbeaten, revived the Americans’ World Cup effort and proven to be precisely what was hoped for when he was hired: a safe pair of hands to stabilize a program that threatened to go off the rails.

But the job is far from done. As Arena himself said in the wake of Wednesday’s win, “We’re getting better; we need to…

Sebastian Salazar and Herculez Gomez break down the United States’ win over Costa Rica in the Gold Cup semifinals.

Clint Dempsey discusses why it means so much to him to tie the all-time goals record and to still be playing for the U.S.

Bruce Arena and members of the U.S. are well aware of the threat Jamaica pose ahead of the Gold Cup final.

Bruce Arena explains his discussions with Clint Dempsey about his role with the United States moving forward.
With the United States men’s national team clinging to a 1-0 lead in the 82nd minute of Saturday night’s Gold Cup semifinal, Clint Dempsey prepared to take a free kick from 25 yards. He stood over the ball, feet a little wider than shoulder-width, the picture of calm as he surveyed the defensive wall and Costa Rica goalkeeper Patrick Pemberton’s positioning.
The 34-year-old Dempsey, who had replaced Paul Arriola 20 minutes into the second half, started his run up with a half-step and a little hop,…
