Steve Nicol believes that Man City’s big summer spending has made the club favourites to win the Premier League.

Manchester City defender John Stones has spoken to ESPN FC of the “hurt” he felt in his debut season at the club for letting himself and his teammates down following his £47.5 million transfer from Everton.

The 23-year-old, who is now only the third-most expensive defender at City following the summer arrivals of Benjamin Mendy (£52m) and Kyle Walker (£50m), endured a difficult year at the Etihad Stadium, with manager Pep Guardiola dropping him from the team on more than one occasion.

Craig Burley believes Pep Guardiola’s defence still needs improving, even if Dani Alves decides to join Manchester City.
Dani Alves looks likely to be the latest part of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City summer transfer splurge and the first of a major overhaul of his defence. Portuguese playmaker Bernardo Silva was the first arrival, adding more creativity, and was quickly followed by Ederson Moraes to sort out City’s goalkeeper problems.
But while there are likely to be more signings to add options elsewhere in his team, Guardiola has now turned his attention to the defence, an area many saw as City’s biggest problem…

With John Stones making the move to Manchester for £47m, we look at the most expensive eleven English transfers ever.
England manager Gareth Southgate is weighing up a surprise midfield move for John Stones.
Speaking on the eve of his side’s season-ending friendly against France, Southgate confirmed Harry Kane would retain the captaincy and promised goalkeepers Tom Heaton and Jack Butland 45 minutes each in place of Joe Hart — while also announcing the latter was still his “No. 1.”
But it was his revelation that Stones, Manchester City’s £50 million centre-half, was being considered for a switch into unfamiliar…

ESPN’s Manchester City correspondent Jonathan Smith tells us who he thinks could be playing under Pep Guardiola in the 2017-18 season. John Stones’ first season with Manchester City may not have led to the silverware he was hoping for but his own confidence has been strengthened by unexpected support from rival players.
City went trophyless last term, to the surprise of most pundits, but manager Pep Guardiola has already set about reshaping the squad with a handful of outgoings and the arrivals of Bernardo Silva and Ederson.
Stones, a record £50 million signing from Everton, is sure to be central to those plans, with Guardiola…

Vincent Kompany shares his thoughts on Man City’s season, Pep Guardiola as a manager and his hopes for the 2017-18 season.

Man City captain Vincent Kompany explains why Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero need to keep playing alongside each other. Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany remains convinced that fellow centre-back John Stones “has everything” he needs to thrive at the Premier League’s elite level.
The former Everton player endured a rough first season at the Etihad following his £47.5 million transfer last summer, but Kompany says that the 22-year-old is on track to be a key cog in Pep Guardiola’s side.
“He will thrive once the team gets going again,” Kompany told the Manchester Evening News. “He has everything the manager…

Arsenal twice fought back from a goal down to secure a draw as they look to turn around their poor Premier League form.

Arsenal twice fought back from a goal down to secure a draw as they look to turn around their poor Premier League form.
Almost befitting of April Fools’ weekend, Manchester City and Arsenal both put in performances that summed up their seasons. The joke was on both teams; it was a defensive horror show at either end, but Pep Guardiola will feel more aggrieved at the draw — having seen his players again squander chance after chance. It’s a draw that does neither side any favours.

Pep Guardiola insists he’s delighted with the progress of John Stones despite the loads of criticism.
It’s easy to get swept up in the accepted narrative surrounding John Stones at Manchester City. That he’s unreliable; good for at least one mistake a game; and going to give the ball away trying to play Pep Guardiola’s ridiculous possession football. Why won’t the England defender just clear his lines, instead of rolling it back under pressure to his own goalkeeper when he’s penned in by the corner flag?
However, since City’s defence have begun to calm down in recent weeks, most of that is no longer…

Pep Guardiola has launched a passionate defence of John Stones.
Pep Guardiola’s claim that Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool was “one of happiest days of my career as a manager,” raised plenty of eyebrows on Sunday.
While it was a highly entertaining game, there were many alarming moments for his side and they could have easily lost had Adam Lallana not inexplicably air-kicked with an empty goal to aim at.
But Guardiola was delighted with his team’s response after the disappointment of losing to Monaco in round of 16 in the Champions League on away goals…

The ESPN FC panel look ahead to England’s friendly against Germany and discuss why the rivalry isn’t what it once was.
England defender John Stones says the players have learned from their humiliating Euro 2016 round-of-16 defeat to Iceland.
England, then under the management of Roy Hodgson, crashed out of the tournament to unfancied opponents as they lost an early lead to go down 2-1.
But as Gareth Southgate’s side prepare to face World Cup holders Germany in a friendly at Dortmund on Wednesday, Stones told Sky Sports: “We have got Gareth and he is trying to put his stamp on it and look back to what has happened…

The FC boys debate who’s to blame for Manchester City’s UCL exit: Guardiola or the players?
John Stones bemoaned Manchester City’s defensive frailties in their 3-1 Champions League round-of-16 second-leg loss at Monaco on Wednesday.
Pep Guardiola’s men were eliminated from the competition on away goals after a 6-6 aggregate scoreline, but had one foot into the quarterfinals until a 77th-minute Tiemoue Bakayoko header sent City crashing out.
