Bruce Arena says while the U.S. got a big point vs. Honduras, the door to Russia hasn’t opened at all just yet.

Danny Williams has really seized his opportunity with Huddersfield and could be ideal in central midfield.

The pivotal final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying is on the horizon, and so U.S. players far and wide are looking to impress coach Bruce Arena to earn a call. Here’s a look at who’s hot and who’s not.

Heating up

Danny Williams, MF, Huddersfield Town (Premier League)

Why he’s here: In his first-ever Premier League start, Williams was a 90-minute workhorse for Huddersfield Town in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City.

What this means: Since he took over in November, Arena has shied…

In what has become a timely honored tradition, right when you are settling back into the rhythm of a new European campaign and/or enjoying the fast-paced final quarter of the MLS season, FIFA slams the brakes on everything with an international break.

But there’s no reason to fret; it’s not a lame slate of friendlies but rather a pivotal week of World Cup qualifiers on the docket, especially for the United States men’s national team.

The old saying is familiarity breeds contempt, so by that…

1. U.S. keeps emotions in check to advance

For the majority of the first half, the style and emotion fit El Salvador’s game plan. There was plenty of off-the-ball shenanigans,…

Looking back at the U.S. national team’s Gold Cup opener against Panama, the biggest winners from Saturday’s 1-1 tie may very well have been those U.S. players who watched the game from the bench.
There certainly weren’t many positives to take away from a U.S. performance that saw it’s midfield outplayed, it’s defense look shaky and an attack that wilted in the Nashville heat. Two days after saying his team didn’t play very well, manager Bruce Arena didn’t veer away from that initial postgame criticism.

Eric Lichaj has been here before. Not metaphorically, in a he-has-been-on-the-cusp-of-securing-a-more-permanent-spot-on-the-United-States-men’s-national-team-before sort of way. It’s meant quite literally. He already has been in the very spot where he’s standing, doing an interview as a member of Bruce Arena’s 2017 Gold Cup squad.

Six years ago, Lichaj stayed with the American team at the same Nashville hotel before the 2011 Gold Cup. He was younger then, just 22, and a different type of player….
