Sunday’s clash between two of the top teams in the East had just about everything, as the New York Red Bulls inflicted a second straight home defeat for Atlanta United.
ATLANTA — Atlanta United defender Greg Garza will miss at least four months after undergoing shoulder surgery.
The MLS team announced Tuesday that Garza had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He could miss up to six months, which would sideline him for the rest of the season.
Garza initially hurt his shoulder during the 2017 MLS All-Star Game, but hoped to avoid surgery. He re-aggravated the injury during the second half of Atlanta’s loss to the New York Red Bulls on May 20.

If anybody is well equipped to adjudicate Major League Soccer’s standing in the world, it is Atlanta United defender Greg Garza.

The native Texan began his career in Sao Paulo’s youth system down in Brazil, and he made his professional debut in Portugal. He moved around so often in his teens that he got a tattoo of a gypsy woman on his arm in tribute to his rambling ways.

“I kind of see myself as a gypsy,” Garza told ESPN FC in a phone interview. “I’ve never been afraid of leaving home.”

The United States are deploying in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Graham Zusi starting at right-back and Greg Garza back in the lineup in Bruce Arena’s return to the sidelines for the national team in a friendly against Serbia.
Arena, 65, is back at the helm for his second time around after replacing Jurgen Klinsmann in December after the German was fired as manager. Arena had previously managed the team from 1998 – 2006 including overseeing the team at two World Cups.
