Three-time MLS Defender of the Year Chad Marshall has announced his retirement due to injury, bringing an end to a 16-year career that included stints with the Columbus Crew and Seattle Sounders.
Marshall announced his decision on Wednesday after missing Seattle’s last two games with knee inflammation. Seattle overcame a second-minute goal from Sporting Kansas City to earn a 3-1 win, but they lost Chad Marshall to a red card in the process.
The red card issued to Seattle Sounders FC defender Chad Marshall during a Sept. 1 game against Sporting KC was unanimously rescinded by The Independent Panel.
The panel consists of a representative from the United States Soccer Federation and the Canadian Soccer Federation, along with a representative from the Professional Referee Organization.
Marshall was given a red card by referee Baldomero Toledo after Video Review for a challenge on Johnny Russell in the 81st minute of the 3-1 victory.

Bruce Arena’s return to the sidelines with the U.S. Men’s National Team came in the form of a friendly against Serbia at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. With the stakes just a bit higher than in a usual January camp friendly, the Americans ended the day with a slightly dispiriting goalless draw.
