Diego Simeone says Atletico Madrid want to keep their best players as speculation mounts that Antoine Griezmann will soon leave the club.
It was very much a case of after the Lord Mayor’s show as a second-string Atletico Madrid side slumped to a 2-0 home defeat against Espanyol on Sunday afternoon — their first at the Wanda Metropolitano in La Liga.

There was an understandable sense of lethargy from Los Rojiblancos after their midweek exploits and truth be told, the result was no less than their visitors deserved.

Plenty of food for thought for Diego Simeone, who would have been looking for his fringe players to stake a claim…

Kevin Gameiro, who scored from the penalty spot, emerged as a third option for Atletico’s attack.

Dictionary definition of a job done with little sparkle or shine. Atletico Madrid got back to their winning ways after a late collapse at Villarreal a fortnight ago, but this is not one that will live long in the memory for those who decided to give up their Easter Sunday to watch events at the Wanda.

With the job all but done in Denmark last week, Diego Simeone shuffled his pack, handing a debut to Sergio Gonzalez at left-back. The in-form Kevin Gameiro retained his placed and fired a stunning left-footed effort into the top corner within 10 minutes to extinguish any lingering hopes the visitors may have had.

From there on…

Atletico Madrid’s Fernando Torres couldn’t get anything going against Espanyol.

Atletico Madrid slumped to their first La Liga defeat of the season after shipping yet another late goal, succumbing 1-0 to Espanyol.

Los Rojiblancos looked off it all night and never really looked like securing a victory in Catalonia against a side happy to sit back and soak up pressure. The sight of Fernando Torres labouring up top was frustrating, while substitute Kevin Gameiro then missed a sitter as he ran through one-on-one only to fluff his shot late on.

It proved costly as Sergio Garcia…
