Cruz Azul’s Edgar Mendez celebrates after scoring the second goal their quarterfinal first leg against Queretaro.
MEXICO CITY — Three points on the Liguilla openers in Queretaro and Monterrey:
1. Cruz Azul impresses early; shows no playoff jitters
When Pablo Aguilar slammed in the game’s first goal after 16 minutes at the Estadio Corregidora, no Mexican soccer observer would be surprised if a collective sigh came out of the mouths of Cruz Azul fans everywhere. The Paraguay international put his team on course for what ended up being a comfortable away victory that sets the number one seed up for a smooth road…

MEXICO CITY — The somewhat anticlimactic final weekend of the Liga MX regular season ended with Sunday’s games nothing more than a mere formality. Only Pumas vs. Santos offered the chance to decide which of the two teams would finish above each other in the league table. Even Toluca’s unexpected loss to Lobos BUAP proved a non-starter as their place in the playoff seeding had been decided.
Despite this past slate of games offering little to no drama, there is almost a guarantee of it as soon as…

Santos Laguna’s Argentine striker Julio Furch is getting his paperwork in order to become a Mexican citizen and potentially play for the Mexico squad.
The 29-year-old is leading the Liga MX scoring charts this Apertura with 11 goals and was key for Los Guerreros in their title charge last season.
“We’re starting with the documents,” said Furch in an interview with ESPN Mexico. “The first thing is to bring some that I have in Argentina like my birth certificate and then legalize them.”
Furch stated…

MEXICO CITY – There was drama galore last weekend in Mexico’s top division. Club America and Chivas battled out to a draw in the Clasico Nacional, the only result of its kind last weekend. If not for Matheus Uribe’s missed penalty kick in the 94th minute, there would have been nine winners and nine losers in the latest slate of matches. Needless to say, the results have made changes to the league table — as well as the Power Rankings.

1. CLUB AMERICA

Week 10 ranking: 2

Before we get to this week’s Power Rankings, we would be remiss to omit mention of the violence that overshadowed Sunday’s Tigres vs. Monterrey match.

Such scenes taint our enjoyment of the game, and this latest incident leaves Liga MX — once again — at a crossroads. It simply must act; ignorance is not viable. No fan, regardless of affiliation, should have to fear for his or her safety.

With that, here are the Power Rankings for Week 10:

1. CRUZ AZUL
Record: 7W-2D-1L
Week 9 ranking: 1

Liga MX action returns to action following the international break and there are plenty of storylines as the 2018 Apertura begins the second half of the season. Here is what we’ll be watching:
Can Necaxa upset undefeated Cruz Azul?
Necaxa was one of the talking points of the first few weeks of the season, mainly due to Marcelo Michel Leano’s presence on the bench. The 31-year-old — a friend of Argentina legend Cesar Luis Menotti — had his team playing attacking football, was shaking journalists’…

Fabio Quagliarella may have already won goal of the season with his stunner against Napoli, but who joins him in the top five in Week 3 of Serie A?

After a loss and a draw in their first two Serie A matches, Inter hit their stride against longtime rival Pippo Inzaghi’s struggling Bologna side.
Gabriel Barbosa has said he has unfinished business in Italian football as he focuses on getting back to his best in Brazil.
Barbosa, nicknamed “Gabigol,” joined Inter Milan in 2016 with high expectations following his €29.5 million move, having scored 56 goals in 153 games for Santos and been a part of Brazil’s gold medal Olympic team, but he went on to score just one goal in nine Serie A appearances.
He was loaned to Benfica last term, although he did not fare any better in Portugal, making…
