Herculez Gomez explains why the new Leagues Cup is a first step toward more direct competition between MLS and Liga MX.
There were 27 Liga MX games over the last 20 days, with the 2019 Apertura regular season table starting to take shape at the international break.
Here’s what we’ve learned over the eight rounds of games so far:
Inconsistency rules
The Liga MX power hierarchy appears to be fairly well set, at least on paper. Mexico’s first division — with its split season format and playoffs — may be much more amenable than the big European leagues to outsiders making a run at the title, even if the division between…

Cruz Azul are staggering in 2019 and have declined since they reached the Apertura final. A game vs. Veracruz should be a great tonic for what ails them.

Round eight of the 2019 Clausura is almost upon us with one new face on the manager’s bench and other head coaches under fire. Here are three things to watch out for this weekend:

Can Veracruz provide a reprieve for struggling Cruz Azul?

When things are looking bad, a game against Veracruz is about as good as it gets for a Liga MX side. And for Cruz Azul, things have gradually declined since that final Apertura loss in December to Mexico City rival Club America.

There are different ways to measure…

Cruz Azul’s Edgar Mendez celebrates after scoring the second goal their quarterfinal first leg against Queretaro.
MEXICO CITY — Three points on the Liguilla openers in Queretaro and Monterrey:
1. Cruz Azul impresses early; shows no playoff jitters
When Pablo Aguilar slammed in the game’s first goal after 16 minutes at the Estadio Corregidora, no Mexican soccer observer would be surprised if a collective sigh came out of the mouths of Cruz Azul fans everywhere. The Paraguay international put his team on course for what ended up being a comfortable away victory that sets the number one seed up for a smooth road…

MEXICO CITY — The somewhat anticlimactic final weekend of the Liga MX regular season ended with Sunday’s games nothing more than a mere formality. Only Pumas vs. Santos offered the chance to decide which of the two teams would finish above each other in the league table. Even Toluca’s unexpected loss to Lobos BUAP proved a non-starter as their place in the playoff seeding had been decided.
Despite this past slate of games offering little to no drama, there is almost a guarantee of it as soon as…

In order to stay alive in the playoff hunt, there will be little to no room for mistakes from the aforementioned squads who still have much to prove. With only goal differential narrowly separating them, let’s…

Marcel Ruiz patterns his style after Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta.

QUERETARO, Mexico — Marcel Ruiz enters the interview room at the Mexican federation’s facilities with apprehension. It’s a new experience for him. His eyes reveal feelings of uncertainty over the questions to come, over how he’ll handle more than three interviews in less than 15 minutes. He’s never been through anything like this.

“It’s easier to be on the pitch,” said Queretaro’s newest sensation, who at just 17 already had his first stint with Mexico’s senior team a couple of weeks ago after…

Believe it or not, we’re at the halfway point of the 2018 Apertura regular season. With an international break underway after Week 8’s matches, we now have an opportunity to take a step back and analyze what we’ve seen so far in Mexico’s top flight.

After looking at a number of memorable performances, here’s the Liga MX best XI from the first half of the season.

GK: Tiago Volpi, Queretaro
While it’s true that Cruz Azul’s Jesus Corona and Pachuca’s Alfonso Blanco have allowed fewer goals,…

Chivas are having some bad luck but finishing their chances should see them climb the table again.

A second-half, injury-time goal from Alan Pulido rescued a tie for Chivas against Queretaro in Liga MX on Wednesday, ending the Guadalajara club’s run of three consecutive defeats. The point from the 2-2 draw was construed as a positive for the institution and understandably so, given that Queretaro had gone 2-1 up in the 88th minute through a Miguel Martinez header.

“I think the point is positive in many ways,” said Chivas coach Matias Almeyda after the game. “I admire the reaction of my players…
