It’s 2019. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the dominant forces in soccer, winning nearly every individual award and leading their clubs to title after title. Yet both are in the twilights of their careers, at 31 and 34 years old respectively, and previous heirs to the throne such as Neymar and Gareth Bale haven’t come close to filling their boots.

It’s the same story for a slew of defensive talent, as Vincent Kompany, Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Buffon and Giorgio Chiellini are approaching…

Diego Lainez joined Real Betis last week.
Former Barcelona defender Rafa Marquez is backing fellow Mexican Diego Lainez to succeed at Real Betis despite his slight frame, questioning whether Lionel Messi’s size has been an impediment to the Argentine.
Lainez signed for Betis from Club America last weekend and a lot is expected from a player projected to be a future El Tri star.
“We’ve got to give him time and be patient,” the 39-year-old Marquez said in an interview with ESPN. “Height? Ask Leo Messi, I don’t think [it’s an issue]. Without…

Diego Lainez, 18, appears set to join Dutch giants Ajax.
MEXICO CITY — Club America youngster Diego Lainez lifted the Liga MX title on Sunday and is now set to sign for Dutch side Ajax, sources close to the deal have told ESPN Mexico.
Univision first reported that there was a formal offer for Lainez and that Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Cruz Azul to win the 2018 Apertura was likely to be his final game for Las Aguilas.
Lainez, 18, was linked with Lyon earlier this week and has indicated previously that a move to Europe is in his plans for the future.

NASHVILLE — Angel Zaldivar was sent off for Mexico’s 1-0 loss to the United States on Wednesday and pulled no punches in criticizing the opposition’s attitude.
The Chivas forward saw red in the 67th minute, two minutes after 6-foot-4 defender Matt Miazga had appeared to mock 5-5 Mexico forward Diego Lainez about his height.
Miazga was then photographed waving off Zaldivar as he left the field, something which irked the 24-year-old.
“You see what their values are, they don’t know how to win,” Zaldivar…

Diego Lainez’s two goals vs. Pachuca announced his presence on the Liga MX stage.
Diego Lainez is the type of player you can recall the time and place you saw him play live for the very first time.

The ball seems to be glued to his left foot when he dribbles, the opposition players smell danger and approach, often leaving space for teammates, and there is a grace about him that few players possess. He invites the spectator to imagine when he’s on the ball, both in the immediate sense of where a play will end up, as well as just how high the 18-year-old’s ceiling could be.

Lainez’s…

Jesus Angulo has been tabbed as part of the next generation by Juan Carlos Osorio.
There had been pressure from the media and Mexican footballers’ association on Liga MX to establish rules that force clubs to give youngsters more playing time. And it worked: For the 2018 Apertura, the league has added a regulation to ensure each club gives players, born in 1997 or before, at least 765 minutes of playing time during the regular season.
The rule comes in at an interesting time for the Mexican national team. El Tri will require a gradual generational change at some point between…
