Ireland are through to the qualifying playoff thanks to a goal in Cardiff from James McClean, which also eliminated Wales.

Chris Coleman could not lead Wales into the World Cup.
Sam Vokes has underlined the Wales squad’s desire for Chris Coleman to stay as manager and put World Cup anguish behind them.
Coleman’s future remains uncertain ahead of friendlies against France in Paris on Friday and at home to Panama four days later.
It remains to be seen whether these two games will mark the end of Coleman’s near six-year reign, with talks between the manager and the Football Association of Wales over a new contract set to resume later this month.
But Wales and Burnley forward…

West Ham cap off a disappointing season with a 2-1 win at Burnley and finish 11th in the Premier League

Burnley ended their season on a low note, finishing 16th in the Premier League table after a 2-1 defeat at home to West Ham on Sunday.

Sam Vokes continued his fine run of goalscoring form, his fifth goal in five games giving the Clarets an early lead, but Sofiane Feghouli and Andre Ayew hit back for the visitors.

Sean Dyche’s men ended the season with three wins from their last 16 matches, and that they finish lower than Swansea City in the table demonstrates how disappointing recent results…

According to Steve Nicol, defenders Michael Keane and Virgil van Dijk are on the same level in that they are solid defenders who have yet to prove themselves at the top level.
The Premier League is an unforgiving place, but Bournemouth and Burnley are showing the way forward for smaller clubs.
On Saturday the two clubs will meet at Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium, with survival virtually guaranteed — although not quite mathematically for the Clarets — with two matches still to play.

Though both teams have little to play for at this stage of the campaign, they have the chance to finish in the top half of the league table, which would be a stunning achievement. But the…

Steve Nicol takes issue with some picks in the Premier League team of the weekend, though he admits choosing was tough.

After an entertaining second half, Sam Vokes’ late equaliser gave Burnley a deserved draw against West Brom.
Sam Vokes scored the goals which virtually ensured Burnley’s Premier League survival, with the striker having sensed they would avoid the drop as early as August.
The Clarets reached the 40-point landmark with a 2-2 home draw against West Brom on Saturday, and they can consider themselves clear of the relegation scrap ahead of the final two fixtures given they are six points above the bottom three with a much healthier goal difference.
It is a scenario few envisaged when they won promotion 12 months…

Romelu Lukaku continued his record of scoring in every home game in 2017 as Everton swept aside Burnley.

Romelu Lukaku continued his record of scoring in every home game in 2017 as Everton swept aside Burnley.
Everton have been explosive at home this year, so only the most optimistic Burnley fans could have hoped for a first away win of the season. But Sean Dyche’s team put in another improved performance, particularly in an excellent first half.

The Clarets were perhaps unlucky not to take the lead during that opening 45 minutes, but with top scorer Andre Gray relegated to the bench they couldn’t make the most of several chances which fell their way.

The hosts had needed a slice of luck to take the…

Liverpool sealed three important points in their hunt for a top four finish as they downed Burnley 2-1 at Anfield.

Liverpool sealed three important points in their hunt for a top four finish as they downed Burnley 2-1 at Anfield.

English Premier League: Matthew Lowton (90’+3) Liverpool 2-1 Burnley
It was the same old story again for Burnley away from home in the Premier League as they lost 2-1 at Liverpool despite a brave defensive performance at Anfield on Sunday.

The Clarets led early through Ashley Barnes but although they had periods on the front foot they then withdrew and defended too deep, conceding somewhat inevitably in first-half injury time yet again.

Emre Can’s second-half strike deserved to win a game of very few chances for either side and Burnley’s long wait for a first…

Fernando Llorente’s dramatic stoppage-time winner earns Swansea three important points.

Fernando Llorente’s dramatic stoppage-time winner earns Swansea three important points.

English Premier League: Fernando Llorente (90’+2) Swansea City 3-2 Burnley
Swansea City edged a five-goal thriller at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday, Fernando Llorente powering home his second header of the game to secure a 3-2 win in injury-time.

Andre Gray’s brace had looked set to give the Clarets their first away win of the season, but considering Swansea hit the woodwork three times in the first half and that referee Anthony Taylor bizarrely gave the visitors a penalty for Sam Vokes handling the ball, it is hard to argue with the fairness of the result.

It was a frustrating day for most of Burnley’s side, including Andre Gray who squandered one golden chance.
Burnley suffered their second embarrassing cup exit of the season, missing a golden chance to reach the FA Cup quarterfinals after being deservedly dumped out 1-0 by non-league Lincoln City.

It was a dire game with neither side possessing much quality and the rugged Imps scored from their only chance of the second half, with the Clarets similarly lacking incision in the final third.

With a cluster of rotten individual performances, Burnley did not seem up for the physical battle waged by Lincoln…

Sam Vokes, right, got the scoring going and Burnley simply cruised to victory from there.

In horrible conditions at a wet and windy Turf Moor, Burnley eased into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win against Championship strugglers Bristol City. Once Sam Vokes had put the Clarets ahead at the end of the first half, the result was never in doubt and a magnificent Steven Defour goal secured the victory, a 10th at home in all competitions this season.

Burnley were the beneficiaries of some hopeless defending at times but equally, they didn’t have to stretch themselves…
