Can anyone stop Cruz Azul? They remain top of Liga MX having navigated back-to-back tricky opponents.

MEXICO CITY — Last week’s flutter of activity in Mexican first division soccer ended with very different results for two of the league’s title candidates. Cruz Azul retained its undefeated status through a slate of tough games while Club America was unable to pull out a single win from their three matches.

Chivas, however, benefitted greatly from the condensed schedule. A week ago, they were mired near the bottom of the league table with just one point. Today, goal difference is the only thing…

Pineda’s goal helped give Chivas a big clasico win over Atlas and kick-start their season.

GUADALALARA, Mexico — Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” rang out inside Estadio Jalisco less than 10 minutes after Chivas had defeated Atlas 1-0 in Friday’s Clasico Tapatio.

“Don’t worry about a thing, ’cause every little thing gonna be alright…”

It was a perplexing choice of song given that home side Atlas had just completed the first seven games of the Apertura without scoring a single goal and broken Queretaro’s modern-day record of going 548 consecutive minutes without netting in Liga…

Veracruz drama cure for crisis-ridden Chivas?
If one Liga MX club earned more ridiculousness points in the headlines stakes than Chivas’ sponsor-filled news conference this week, it was Veracruz, with Guillermo Vazquez resigning and the lid being lifted on the “double contracts” that exist at the club.
On Friday, the two sides square off at Estadio Luis “Pirata” Fuente. Veracruz’s incoming coach Juvenal Olmos will be taking charge for the first time, 11 years since his last coaching job, with the…

Chivas boss Jose Cardozo’s press conference looked a little bit different on Sunday.
Liga MX side Chivas may not have a sponsor on the front of their shirt like others in the sponsorship-cluttered world of Mexican soccer, but they sure are making up for it elsewhere.
After another devastating home loss on Sunday — the Guadalajara club hasn’t won at home in Liga MX since last October — coach Jose Cardozo gave the usual post-match press conference to make the usual excuses about what went wrong, but his words seemed to be overshadowed by something else.

Cereal, organic cereal,…

Cruz Azul grabbed an impressive win over Tigres to remain perfect this season and top of our Power Rankings.

MEXICO CITY — Week 3 of the Apertura tournament in Mexico marked the very first time that all four of Liga MX’s big teams accumulated points. However, Chivas remains the only one in a group that includes Club America, Cruz Azul and Pumas to not have a win yet this season.

Their 2-2 draw at Toluca pulled them out of the cellar, leaving just one team (Pachuca) with zero points in the league table.

Here are the Power Rankings for Mexico’s first division:

1. CRUZ AZUL:
Record: 3W-0D-0L

Costa Rica have reached out to Matias Almeyda to discuss their national team coaching opening.
Former Chivas coach Matias Almeyda has had talks with Costa Rica about coaching their national team and said he has not had any other formal approaches.

“I had the chance to talk with [Costa Rica’s] directors. They called me, which I appreciate a lot,” Almeyda told ESPN’s Futbol Picante. “As I was on vacation with the family at that moment,…

MEXICO CITY – Two weeks into the Liga MX regular season, some teams are already bucking most analysts’ preseason predictions.
