Sebastian Salazar and Herculez Gomez assess Mexico’s World Cup after a last 16 exit and discuss why Liga MX could be a hindrance on El Tri’s future.
It isn’t easy to jump into the Mexican first division.
While countless new fans find difficulties with the language barrier, several others get lost in the long list of idiosyncrasies that define the Liga MX. A quick discussion on promotion and relegation alone is enough to confuse even the most die-hard of soccer supporters.
Nonetheless, it’s worth the trouble. With an impressive technical level of play, no lack of enthralling matches and a number of talents hidden among the 18 teams, it’s easy…

Sebi Salazar sounds off on why he can’t be proud of Mexico after a seventh straight World Cup exit in the last 16, even against a team like Brazil.

MEXICO CITY — The field at Azteca Stadium has been resurfaced in time for the new season to begin for its two tenants, Cruz Azul and America.
Earlier this summer, the old grass was removed and replaced by a newer, more resilient turf. Cruz Azul will play for the first time on the new surface when they open their Mexican Liga Bancomer season Saturday against Puebla.

Cruz Azul and America will play on new turf at Azteca Stadium this season.
Led by manager Pedro Caixinha, the club initiated and paid for the field renovation. Their practice fields were also resurfaced…

Coming off a Copa MX title, Necaxa have turned things over to 31-year-old Marcelo Michel Leano.
MEXICO CITY — Marcelo Michel Leano, Liga MX’s youngest manager, was not yet born when the league’s oldest boss, Puebla’s Enrique Meza, took his first team over in 1982. When Leano’s Necaxa and Meza’s Puebla square off this August, the match also will serve to pit two very distinct schools of thought within the Mexican game: experience versus youth.
For the Apertura 2018 campaign, three managers under 40 will serve on Liga MX benches. Queretaro’s Rafael Puente Jr. is 39, Gerardo Espinoza of Atlas…

Roger Martinez has shown what he’s capable but Club America will need him to show it consistently all season long.

Plenty of new faces will inundate the Mexican first division during the 2018 Apertura. More than half of the 18 Liga MX squads have gone abroad to make signings intending to help them wrest the title away from Santos Laguna, the defending champions.

Recent years have seen Liga MX expand beyond its usual market to bring players in, and this year is no exception. A 2014 World Cup runner-up, a Euro 2008 third-place winner and a 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup champion are among those joining the league,…

ESPN FC’s Herculez Gomez gives his take on where the U.S. fell short with Jonathan Gonzalez, leading him to choose to play for Mexico.
Former United States youth international Jonathan Gonzalez was named rookie of the year at Liga MX’s “Balon de Oro” awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Saturday.
The 19-year-old central midfielder debuted for Monterrey last July and enjoyed a breakout 2017 Apertura, after which the California native switched allegiances from the United States to Mexico.
“I’m very happy for this recognition,” Gonzalez said. “I’d like to thank my club, Antonio Mohamed’s coaching staff, and, of course, my family.”

Djaniny Tavares has left Santos Laguna to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli, the Liga MX team announced on Friday.
