Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat trick puts Atletico Madrid in dire straits heading into Leg 2 at the Vicente Calderon.
An inexplicably bad display from Atletico Madrid saw their Champions League campaign all but come to an embarrassing end as they were thumped 3-0 by great city rivals Real Madrid.

From the off Atleti looked sluggish and shy. In the end, they were dominated by a Merengues side who so often save their best for this competition. It is no disgrace to lose to Real in the Champions League, but to lose in this fashion is. That Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick just compounds the misery.

The Calderon…

BT Sport highlight: Leicester City’s magic runs out at the hands of Atletico Madrid, losing 2-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals.

Leicester City’s magic runs out at the hands of Atletico Madrid, losing 2-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals.
Atletico reached a third Champions League semifinal in four years playing the way they relish, with their backs against the wall, and batting away everything Leicester City could throw at them as they drew 1-1 to progress 2-1 on aggregate.
The first half went just how they had planned, with one foot in the semifinals thanks to Saul Niguez’s pin-point header. And although the second half was a gruelling affair, that’s when Atletico really come into their own and they will have their eyes on…

The FC crew discuss Jose Mourinho’s ‘contradictory’ post-match comments about his team’s inability to close out games.

Paul Mariner and Steve Nicol can’t agree on whether N’Golo Kante or Eden Hazard deserves to win PFA Player of the Year.

“If we pay to a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for, to sign Luke Shaw, we are dead. We would have killed our stability with financial fair play and killed the stability in our dressing room.”

That was Jose Mourinho in July 2014. The Manchester United manager was producing memorable quotes about his left-back long before he reacted to the substitute’s cameo against Everton last week by suggestion it was “my brain in his body.” In 2014, Shaw was considered a prodigy: he was voted the…

Atletico Madrid moved into third place in La Liga after a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad ahead of this weekend’s Madrid derby.

Atletico has now won five straight and head to the Bernabeu to face rival Real playing some of their best football.
Atletico Madrid’s new-found goal machine Filipe Luis secured a harder than necessary 1-0 victory at home to Real Sociedad on Tuesday night.

Fernando Torres then somehow contrived to hit the post and hit into the side-netting when presented twice with an open goal moments later.

Yannick Carrasco and Angel Correa were also guilty of missing chances, but Atletico comfortably held on to all but seal Champions League football again next season.

Antoine Griezmann’s second-half score rescued Atletico Madrid a point at Deportivo.

Antoine Griezmann’s second-half score rescued Atletico Madrid a point at Deportivo.

Atletico Madrid were poor against Deportivo La Coruna but the real concern is with injured striker Fernando Torres.
The famous new manager bounce caught a distinctly below-par Atletico Madrid cold as they somehow escaped Estadio Riazor with a 1-1 draw against Deportivo La Coruna on Thursday.

Atletico were lucky to go in at the break just a single Florin Andone goal down and rode their luck in the second period before a wonderful effort from Antoine Griezmann drew them somewhat undeservedly level. However, the game was overshadowed by a sickening injury to Fernando Torres late on.

A quickfire hat-trick by Kevin Gameiro gave Atletico Madrid a crucial win in La Liga to stay in touch with the top three.

A quickfire hat-trick by Kevin Gameiro gave Atletico Madrid a crucial win in La Liga to stay in touch with the top three.

Kevin Gameiro’s five-minute hat trick was the second fastest hat trick in La Liga history.
A flourish in the final 10 minutes saw Atletico Madrid claim an impressive 4-1 victory away to Sporting Gijon on Saturday. The scoreline is an unfair reflection on the home side — who dominated large periods of the game — but Atleti’s clinical streak in front of goal ensured them of the three points.

A Yannick Carrasco strike was cancelled out by Sergio Alvarez in a quick start to the second half and after both sides exchanged chances, substitute Kevin Gameiro smashed in a quick-fire hat trick…

Antoine Griezmann did not have his best day but Atletico’s main man came up big down the stretch with the match-winner.
A barnstorming last five minutes helped Atletico Madrid secure a memorable 3-2 victory over Celta Vigo at a sodden Vicente Calderon on Sunday night. A rare mistake by Miguel Moya gifted the visitors an early lead, but Fernando Torres’ stunner levelled things up shortly after. El Nino should have doubled the advantage but slammed his penalty against the bar and it almost cost his side dearly when John Guidetti put Celta ahead with a little over 10 minutes to play.
However, a sublime volley…

It was a tale of two halves for Antoine Griezmann, who struggled in the first but then scored and came to life in the second.
A real humdinger of a game saw Atletico Madrid go down 2-1 against Barcelona in their Copa del Rey semifinal first leg at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday night. Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi scored wonderful individual goals in what was a wretched first half from Los Colchoneros, but their second-half rally was a sight to behold. Antoine Griezmann pulled one back and only profligate finishing cost them a draw (or better). All to play for come Tuesday’s return fixture.
